It is true that man possess a side that is barbarous, as you have seen for yourself. But it is a double-edged sword; it can be used to acquire precious things as well as protecting them.

For some, things such as friendship and love are the most precious. But I believe that beneath them, there is something more precious than these.

They are driven to persue it, and persue it entirely for their own sake, and no other. A Dream.

One man's dream can hold dominion over the entire world, or devote one man's entire life in the forging of a single sword. Some dreams can be persued in solitude. Others are like storms, blowing dozens, even hundreds of other dreams apart in their wake.

Dreams breathe life into men, and can cage their life in suffering. Yet even when they're forgotten, dreams still smoulder deep in men's hearts.

Some men see only life and death; they are dead, for they have no dreams.
This is the philosophy of life as seen by Griffith Whitehawk, leader of the Band of the Hawk in the Berserk anime. He'd lost a LOT of cool points early on in the series, but this quote by him, which I'd paraphrased to some extent because I had to write this from memory, is very significant.

It's also something I've taken to heart, and made the core of my own philosophy, because it's very true what's said here. One cannot claim to be driven by nothing, because deep down, there is something that everyone is striving for, that is pulling them through life. Relentless in its demands, we are helpless to resist, because we want this thing, whatever it is, and nothing save total disillusionment will keep us from attaining it.

Dreams give purpose and meaning to life. If a man has forgotten his dreams, can he claim to be alive?
